Louisiana State Museum, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism.
Opened 1 February 1, 2006 as Louisiana's newest addition to Baton Rouge's cultural landscape and symbol of Louisiana's future. The nine Louisiana State Museum properties in the French Quarter have sustained varying degrees of damage. The area received little water from flooding. The majority of the damage consisted of a few missing roof tiles, windows and shutters in the Cabildo complex and at the Presbytere. Hardest hit was the Old U.S. Mint, which lost a large portion of its copper roof. As a result, water came into contact with office areas, and a very small percentage of the jazz collection (approximately 1%) was affected. Museum staff has been working closely with State and Federal officials to stabilize buildings and protect the collections housed within them. Contractors engaged by FEMA have secured the Mint roof with tarp, and temporary repairs are underway. Documents retrieved from Mint offices were immediately freeze-dried at LSU’s Hill Memorial Library, and librarians report that the pieces are progressing well. Reopenings of New Orleans buildings will be done on an individual, staged basis as soon as conditions and staffing permit. We do not have opening dates scheduled at this time for The Presbytere, The 1850 House, Madame John's Legacy, and the Old U.S. Mint. Please continue to check back for more information. Despite disruptions from Hurricane Katrina, events and exhibitions will continue as scheduled for branches in Natchitoches, Patterson, Thibodaux and Baton Rouge
Shaw Center for the Arts
Inside the channel-glass skin of the 125,000 square-foot facility resides a stunning art museum, as well as one of the most intimate and acoustically brilliant theatrical spaces in the southern United States. Towering high about the Mississippi River, the fifth floor of the structure houses the LSU Museum of Art in grand fashion. A dramatic museum space, the Museum sprawls the entire length of the Shaw Center, showcasing more than 17,000 square feet of exhibition space. The spacious facility houses touring and permanent collections. Seating 325 people, the Manship Theatre is truly a magical venue for musicians, dancers and actors alike. Designed in the spirit of a London "West End" space, the Manship includes an orchestra level and two balconies, a magnificent audio system, a large fly house and automated orchestra pit. Adjacent to the theatre are two state-of-the-art black box theatres, as well as a spacious contemporary art space "Brunner Gallery", which will feature some of the region's most exciting up and coming artists.

The Manship Theatre

The Manship Theatre offers a unique experience for its theatre audience: 325 front row seats. The theatre, modeled after the style of classic European opera houses, is one of the most beautifully intimate theatres in the United States. With the 11th row as the Manship Theatre's rear seating, the audience member can see eye to eye with the performers onstage, and have a once in a lifetime experience.

Old State Capitol
Center for Political and Governmental History
Located high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, the Old State Capitol stands today as a monument ot our past. Completed in 1849, the building housed the Louisiana Legislature until Union forces captured the city in 1862. That winter a fire gutted the interior of the structure. In 1879, the capitol was returned to Baton Rouge and reconstruction of the building was begun. The Legislature returned in 1882 and remained until 1932 when the new capitol was completed. Now being restored to its original grandeur, the Old State Capitol is the state's archives for film and video. It houses both traditional and state-of-the-art interactive exhibts and a multi-media film presentation. The Old State Capitol recently marked the 111th birthday of Huey Long. A new installation of a permanent exhibit,Huey Long Live! The Kingfish Speaks. which includes a life-size animatronic of the legendary governor.

Old Arsenal Museum
This imposing powder magazine, listed in the National register of Historic Places, is one of Baton Rouge's oldest landmarks. Originally constructed in the 1830's, this site on the river was of particular military importance to early settlers as well as Federal and Confederate troops. Saved from destruction in the 1930's, the Arsenal was restored and reopened in 1992 as a museum.

Louisiana Arts and Science Center Riverside Museum
The Louisiana Arts & Science Center offers a variety of educational and entertainment opportunities for visitors of all ages. The museum features: changing fine art exhibits; a permanent Egyptian tomb exhibit with mummies; Discovery Depot (a creative playroom for small children); Science Station (a hands-on science gallery); Louisiana's only Challenger Learning Center (by reservation only); and workshops, films and lectures. In spring 2002, the museum will open the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium, a world-class facility featuring planetarium shows and large-format films.

U.S.S. Kidd and Nautical Center
This 369 foot World War II Fletcher Class Destroyer has been restored to it's V-J Day configuration. Overnight camping on the Kidd is available. Exhibits include the largest collection of model ships in the south. A restored P-40 fighter plane from the WWII Burma Campaign, an A-7E Corsair attack fighter jet from the Vietnam Era, and a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are also included. Exhibits include information on the USS Baton Rouge, atomic submarine, a walk through exhibit of the gundeck of Old Ironsides and memorials to the residents of Louisiana that have been killed in combat from the Revolutionary War to the present.

Old Governor's Mansion
Built in 1930 by Governor Huey P. Long and was the home to nine Louisiana Governors. Now this restored house museum includes artifacts including Jimmie Davis' guitar and Huey Long's pajamas. Memorabilia, antiques and history of past Louisiana governors.More Here

Pentagon Barracks Museum
Built in 1823-24 to house U.S.Army Troups charged with defending Baton Rouge. The barracks housed many famous military men, including President Zachary Taylor. Original site of Louisiana State University, now opened as the Capitol Complex Information Center and Gift Shop.

The New Governor's Mansion
The fence has been completed. If you like the fence Click your mouse on the image of the un-fenced mansion which was built in 1963 in modified Greek Revival Style as a replica of one of the state's plantation mansions and ask current Governor Blanco to tell the former Gov, "Big" Mike Foster what you think. Others obviously liked the UN-Fenced look as you will note when you go to the official mansion.

Louisiana State Archives
Established in 1956 by the State Legislature, the Louisiana State Archives is responsible for collecting and maintaining the official records of the Louisiana State Government. Among these records are genealogical information, voter registration, tax assessment rolls, and military service records, passenger lists and census records, the Archives houses an extensive research library. A rotating exhibit gallery is located in the main entry.

LSU Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens
Barn,Plantation and Architecture sections depict Louisiana's rural heritage of the 18th and 19th centuries. Victorian-style, 25-acre Windrush Gardens features classical statuary throughout. This large outdoor complex contains many 19th century buildings of the rural South. Many were moved from plantation sites, some from outlying areas of Louisiana and others are faithful copies of typical plantation buildings. All are appropriately furnished. The compound includes an overseer's house, blacksmith shop, open kettle sugar mill, plantation commissary and church.

Magnolia Mound Plantation
French Creole architecture, c. 1791, authentically restored to elegant simplicity of colonial Louisiana. 16-acre site with Visitors Center, gift shop, costumed guides, seasonal open-hearth cooking demonstrations.

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center
A very beautiful nature center located in the heart of Baton Rouge. Wildlife is plentiful at Bluebonnet Swamp. Many bird species make their homes in the swamp, including Yellow-crowned Night Herons, Prothonatory Warblers and a variety of owls and hawks. Raccoons, foxes, bobcats, snakes, turtles and alligators are also known to inhabit the site. The Nature Center building is home to Louisiana's largest duck hunting decoy collection and also houses a magnificent collection of carved wooden animals. The facility also holds temporary exhibits on history, ecology and culture.

The LSU Museums of Natural Science and Geoscience
Located on the main LSU campus in Baton Rouge. These museums feature collections of archaeological, geographic and geological intrest. The Natural Science Museum is noted for its complete collection of native Louisiana birds. Audubon State Commemorative Area
Early 19th century plantation living can be seen in Oakly, the home where artist naturalist John James Audubon created many of his famous bird paintings. "The rich magnolias covered with fragrant blossoms, the holly, the beech, the tall yellow poplar, the hilly ground and even the red clay, all excited my admiration. Such an entire change in the fall of nature in so short a time seems almost supernatural, and surrounded once more by numberless warblers and thrushes, I enjoyed the scene."

Baker Heritage Museum and Cultural Center
General history museum in a restored Victorian bulding built in 1906. The museum reflects the period of time around 1900 and displays primarily artifacts related to rural living community. There are ten auxilliary buildings and one main building. Recently on the national register of Historical Places. Pre-arranged group tours are available.

Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum
"The mission of the Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum Foundation is to support and promote the historical, educational, and cultural role of the Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum."
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM, and on Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM.
We are closed every Sunday and Monday, and on New Year's Day, Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
